Last week, I was fortunate enough to be able to try the 24 Karat Gold Ultra Therapy Facial by one of New York City’s most trusted estheticians, Carol Chan. At SkinSpoke, her new West Village spa, Carol is responsible for the luminous skin you see on actresses like Christine Evangelista and models like Hannah Donker, both who adore the 24K treatment.
The 24K Ultra Therapy Facial uses aproprietary gold mask made from pure 24 karat gold leaf as well as a gold cream mask that has niacinamide extracts for improving firmness. The treatment also infuses a gold serum using SkinSpoke’s macro-fusion treatment to drive the benefits of the element into deeper layers of the skin.
Carol says, “The combination of these three consistencies in the one treatment, I believe, allows my clients to receive all the benefits gold has to offer as opposed to using only one type of gold mask on the face. Clients can expect their skin to be brighter, less congested and they should notice increased firmness.”
I fell in love with the salon the minute I walked in. It has the atmosphere of a cozy old townhouse apartment and is in a darling 1930 building at 158 West 13th Street. The reception area is light and airy with a large quantity of natural products for sale on a bureau, and there is a welcoming glass tank of organic honeydew melon and peppermint water made with peppermint from a staff member’s own garden.
The treatment rooms look more like bedrooms and all rooms have the original quaint details original to the building and adorable vintage lighting. You get a comfortable soft cotton robe to wear during your treatment and Carol starts out the gold facial with makeup removal and an overall basic cleansing with Skinceutical products.
The 24 Karat Gold Ultra Therapy Facial lasts a full 90 minutes and yo say it is relaxing and thorough is an understatement. Carol promises that all customers’ skin will be glowing when they leave. The treatment starts with a lovely shoulder rub while getting softening mask. You then get the most thorough extractions. I have oily yet aging skin and Carol spent about 15 minutes taking the built up sebum out of every pore often using single use needles to clean out deep whiteheads and blackheads. When I saw everything that was squeezed out of my skin, I was in shock but very grateful that it was all removed.
Carol followed up with another good cleansing and she did a double layer mask. She then cut up layers of 24 K gold leaf sheets that she purchases from a beauty supplier in Korea and places them on top. They stayed on about a half hour before being removed with a special removal cream and then used warm water on a cloth to get off the final bits. The magic od the gold is that since it is a metal, it naturally pulls out the impurities in your skin.
The facial ended with a delicious arm and hand massage done with a Beautifly body cream. I could not resist looking at the final results in a mirror and noticed that my skin felt firm and evenly toned. My skintone was so even that it almost looked like I had foundation on! I never expected that after having forehead to neck extractions.
Carol is a kind and caring aesthetician and she will answer any questions about the different steps of the gold facial and the products that she is using. This is a costly facial at about $219 but it is the most thorough one that you will ever get. Carol customize each facial to the customer, whether it be a teenager with cystic acne or a post menopausal woman wanting more firmness.
