Planning The Perfect Foodie Trip To Memphis: From Seven Courses At The Peabody To “PB & B” Sandwiches At The Arcade!

Memphis is one the US’ ultimate foodie cities although it tends to only get “play” for its authentic local BBQ items which includes classic pork ribs done both with homemade sauce and with dry rub, as well as leaner cuts of brisket. There is a really elevated food scene that is worth investing your hard-earned dollars into and in all honesty, you can eat at prices about 40 per cent cheaper than at comparable places in NYC.

Chez Philippe, located in the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, offers an exquisite seven-course tasting menu that exemplifies fine dining with a French twist. The menu is crafted by Keith Clinton, the first Memphis-born chef to lead the kitchen there, and focuses on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. You can see “Chef Keef” preparing the crudo course in the above photo which includes cherry blossom, grapefruit and avocado. The seven-course meal typically includes a variety of sophisticated dishes. Examples from recent menus included my two favorite items, Braised Short Rib topped with and Apple, orange and ginger glaze, and Beef Tenderloin with blue cheese espuma, almond tuile and buttermilk crumbs. The meal begins with a surprise amuse-bouche and often features complimentary tasting dishes between courses, enhancing the overall dining experience. Desserts and petits fours cap off the meal, ensuring a sweet ending . For those interested in wine, Chez Philippe offers an optional wine pairing with generous pours, complementing the intricate flavors of the dishes. The wine selection is often adventurous and includes unique choices not commonly found elsewhere. The ambiance of Chez Philippe is elegant and refined, yet friendly. I bet that Executive Chef Clinton will come out to make sure everything you are dining on is to your satisfaction and maybe even throw a wild card into the mix after asking what your favorite all time meals have been! The new kid on the block in terms of high end dining is Tekila Union, set in a stunning 100-year-old plus mansion in Memphis’ Central District! It’s only been open a month but is already experiencing a lot of fully sold out nights. Pictured above: the Mexican Street Corn which is topped with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Ribeye Tacos and a pink tequila drink for Pink Flamingo lovers called the Pink Pop (they actually use a special bubble gun at your table to create that big bubble that you see)! I have to tip your off that they have the most perfect chocolate cake in town made with genuine Mexican chocolate that is the perfect degree of sweetness. The rooms at Tekila Union are endless in Tekila Union and feature different types of decor ranging from city warehouse chic to traditional American including stained glass windows along the central wooden staircase. Bishop is a real crown jewel of dining in Downtown Memphis (also known as the Historic Arts District); it is a French brasserie that offers a blend of Southern and French-inspired cuisine. Some highlights from their dinner menu are shown in the photo above: Fromage Brulee with sourdough bread, Steak Frites made with a prime NY strip and sided with thick cut truffle fries, and Chicken served with Parisian gnocchi, corn, mushrooms, herbs and lemon au jus. They have truly unique breakfasts here that blend Southern and French fare into super creative dishes that you cannot get anywhere else–especially dishes created around homemade beignets and roulades. Bishop has a classic bistro decor and welcomes family dining. The restaurant is set within the Central Station Hotel, a renovated 105-year-old train station. This historical context is evident in the restaurant’s design, which features original brick walls and vintage train station fixtures. These elements are combined with modern decor to create a sophisticated yet welcoming environment. Soft lighting, plush seating, and tasteful decor contribute to a cozy atmosphere perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a romantic dinner, a casual meal with friends, or a special celebration. The layout of the restaurant is spacious yet intimate, with a variety of seating options that include cozy booths and larger tables for groups. The open kitchen concept allows diners to see the culinary team at work, adding an interactive element to the dining experience. The ambiance at Bishop is often enhanced by live music and special events, which are a regular feature at the Central Station Hotel. This adds a lively and dynamic element to the dining experience, making it a truly vibrant spot. For more info or to make reservations, go to http://bishopmemphis.com.

Just how Memphis can you get?! At Beauty Shop, you can eat these amazing Chicken Biscuits with watermelon salad and Ribeye Salad while sitting under Priscilla Presley’s personal aqua hairdryer from back in the day when she had super high hair and the Beauty Shop space was a real salon! This is undoubtedly one of the coolest places in town. The Beauty Shop is renowned for its eclectic, globally-inspired menu crafted by Executive Chef and Owner Karen Carrier. Above you can see my influencer pal Rachel Kapur of urbanmilan.com and I enjoying our Fried Peanut Butter & Banana sandwich, Breakfast Sampler plate and legendary Breakfast Pizza at the Arcade Restaurant, located across the street from the Central Station Hotel. Founded in 1919 by Speros Zepatos, a Greek immigrant, the restaurant has a rich history intertwined with the culture and development of Memphis. It is the oldest restaurant in town, which is really a testament to its food and service quality! Initially, the Arcade started as a simple café serving the local community. Over the years, it expanded and evolved, reflecting the changing tastes and trends of the times. By the 1950s, the restaurant had adopted the classic diner style that it is famous for its neon signs and retro décor. The Arcade is not only known for its historical significance as Elvis’ favorite place to eat fried “PB & B” sandwiches at a special back booth but also for its role in TV and movie culture. It has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and music videos, making it a recognizable landmark. Movies like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Mystery Train” used the Arcade as a filming location, highlighting its authentic vintage charm. The menu at the Arcade Restaurant offers a blend of Southern comfort food and diner classics. Patrons can enjoy hearty breakfasts, delicious sandwiches, and traditional Southern dishes like biscuits and gravy or sweet potato pancakes. (The restaurant is particularly famous for its sweet potato pancakes, which have become a favorite among locals and tourists alike.) I love the fact that the Arcade has been in the same family for five generations and that the prices are so reasonable. The food is so solid; I dare you to find any better breakfast food in the country including insane homemade biscuits that you can see coming out of the oven from certain tables!
